Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Thursday called the relationship between the U.S. and China among \u201cthe most consequential in the world,\u201d saying, \u201cwe need to get it right.\u201d Yellen was speaking ahead of a planned meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. <\/p>\n

In a speech to the Asia Society on the Biden administration\u2019s economic strategy in the Indo-Pacific region, Yellen said that the U.S. isn\u2019t seeking to \u201cdecouple\u201d from China, and that if countries in the region take the side of either Washington or Beijing, it would have \u201csignificant negative global repercussions.\u201d <\/p>\n

Biden and Xi \u2014 leaders of the world\u2019s No. 1 and No. 2 economies \u2014 are planning to meet on the sidelines of the Nov. 12-18 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco. <\/p>\n

Yellen has traveled to South Korea, Japan, India and other Indo-Pacific countries during her tenure as Treasury chief, and her speech served to underscore that the U.S. plans to cooperate more with China\u2019s neighbors. <\/p>\n

\u201cAcross the Indo-Pacific, we are rebuilding and strengthening older alliances and investing in newer partnerships,\u201d Yellen said. <\/p>\n

The Treasury chief also spoke Thursday to the Inter-American Development Bank, outlining how diversifying supply chains with \u201ctrusted partners and allies\u201d would have \u201ctremendous potential benefits for fueling growth in Latin America and the Caribbean.\u201d <\/p>\n

Tensions between the U.S. and China remain high, including over U.S. export controls on advanced technology

China\u2019s foreign minister, Wang Yi, believes that the road to a Biden-Xi meeting will not be \u201csmooth sailing\u201d and that both sides must work together to achieve results, the Foreign Ministry said on Sunday. <\/p>\n
