It more than surpassed the average monthly gain of 250,000 jobs from January to August of this year.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clog6o3vc0002356ignyzywog@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      But that total was likely just a short-lived and unsustainable spike, economists say. \u201cIt is difficult to believe that an economy with below 4% unemployment can sustain this pace of job growth,\u201d wrote Dean Baker, senior economist and co-founder of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, in commentary issued Tuesday.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clog6o3vc0003356ie4oae81n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      For the October jobs report, set to be released Friday at 8:30 am ET, consensus estimates are for a notably more sober \u2014 but still solid \u2014 employment growth of 180,000 jobs. Economists also expect the unemployment rate to hold steady at 3.8%, according to Refinitiv.\n  <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/clog9qbv40030356imzz8pp2i@published\" class=\"image image__hide-placeholder\" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-name=\"GettyImages-1693347903.jpg\" data-component-name=\"image\" data-observe-re data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\" data-original-ratio=\"0.6665\" data-original-height=\"1333\" data-original-width=\"2000\" data-url=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/gettyimages-1693347903.jpg?c=original\" data-editable=\"settings\">\n<div class=\"image__container \" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\">\n       <picture class=\"image__picture\"><source height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 1280px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 960px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 480px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(max-width: 479px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clog8a1gy001g356iknb3l3vp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      While economists believe Friday\u2019s report should be far more tame than the month before, there is a fairly sizable question mark: To what degree did the massive labor strikes by workers in the auto, entertainment and health care industries distort the month\u2019s hiring total?\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clog8ihnw001i356icj3eeyz9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      In October, there were 48,100 workers on strike, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. That\u2019s the highest monthly total since February 2004, when 72,000 Southern California grocery workers went on strike.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clog8prqm001k356iw09rtvve@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cI think the [current striking actions] are probably going to cloud signal in this Friday\u2019s data,\u201d Aaron Terrazas, chief economist for Glassdoor, told CNN.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clog6yo69000h356ic4ql377r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      If October\u2019s job growth comes in at the 180,000 figure that economists expect, such an increase would be right in line with what was seen pre-pandemic: From 2010 to 2019, the nation added an average of 183,000 jobs per month.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clog76lc3000n356i5zaen6jr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      (That decade, coincidentally, included the longest-ever period of labor market expansion the United States has ever seen: The nation added jobs for 100 consecutive months between October 2010 and January 2019).\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clog7c2z3000q356ic7pncl1v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      While the current streak of job growth could extend to 34 months in October, this stretch has been history-making in the pure heft of those employment gains.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clog7smi1000s356ilet4wbtm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Prior to the pandemic, monthly job growth north of a half a billion was a rare sight. Since May 2020, that happened 17 times as the US labor market voraciously clawed back the 21 million-plus jobs lost at the outset of the pandemic and then some.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clog70ayd000j356ie3tasu57@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cThere\u2019s no doubt that the labor market is and has been remarkably resilient,\u201d Terrazas said.\n  <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clog9bwc80029356i47227d5c@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"clear-fractures-and-weakness\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n    \u2018Clear fractures and weakness\u2019<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clog7xnxm0011356iksa8hokv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      And there\u2019s no doubt that it is slowing, he added.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clog7y7t70014356idp6lhka5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cDespite the strength, there are clear fractures and weakness building,\u201d he said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clog7yroe0016356iw5vo5zkw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The two ends of the labor force, notably the oldest and youngest of workers, are finding it increasingly difficult to land jobs after being laid off, he said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clog81lpc0018356ie35608xv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      And something that\u2019s been unique to this recovery \u2014 the employment growth that\u2019s rolled from industry to industry \u2014 could be coming to a close, he added.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clog87od4001c356i0cft95z7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cI think all of those growth stories have fizzled out to some degree,\u201d he said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clog883fa001e356i5otg49of@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      If this week\u2019s labor market data is any indication, Friday\u2019s jobs report likely will paint a picture of a labor market that\u2019s cooling and normalizing, said Julia Pollak, chief economist with employment website ZipRecruiter.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clog8z5qw001q356i1bsslg5o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201c\u2018Changed little\u2019 was the most common phrase found in the [Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey] report before the pandemic; since then, the labor market\u2019s been on a roller coaster,\u201d Pollak said. \u201cBut it seems like we\u2019ve now gone back to the good ol\u2019 days of stable labor market dynamics where nothing much changes from day to day and everything keeps sort of chugging along.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clog8u41o001m356ius3z6l47@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      In September, the JOLTS data showed that the number of open jobs remained well above pre-pandemic levels, but other measurements of labor turnover were relatively unchanged, with the exception of layoffs that fell to a 2023 low, according to BLS data released Tuesday.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clog943la001v356id499mzck@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Layoffs trended down even further last month, according to a separate report released Thursday.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clog95s0o001x356iivs86x7b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      US employers announced 36,836 job cuts in October, marking the second-lowest monthly total of the year, according to Challenger, Gray &amp;
