In addition to the Mid-Atlantic, the new hubs will include:\n  <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/list\/instances\/paragraph_E3F2CCE3-DE51-6399-2D44-25FF0541D083@published\" class=\"list \" data-editable=\"settings\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<ul class=\"list__items list__items--ul\">\n<li class=\"list__item\"><span>An Appalachian hub, located across West Virginia, Southeastern Ohio, and Southwestern Pennsylvania \u2013 this hub will be the one largest in terms of production and derive hydrogen from the region\u2019s methane gas; <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"list__item\"><span>A California hub that will span the state and encompassing the ports of Long Beach, Los Angeles and Oakland;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"list__item\"><span>A Houston, Texas-based hub that could eventually expand to include parts of Louisiana, which will derive hydrogen from methane gas and renewable energy; <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"list__item\"><span>An Upper Midwest hub spanning Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, which will derive hydrogen from wind energy and will be used for agriculture and power;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"list__item\"><span>A second Midwest hub will span parts of Illinois, Indiana and southwest Michigan and will be derived mostly from nuclear power;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"list__item\"><span>And a Pacific Northwest hub will span parts of Eastern Washington and Oregon as well as parts of Montana and will focus on hydrogen for freight and agriculture.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_3CCBB70F-4EF1-E018-7331-25FF054D686F@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Officials said they are still determining exact locations for the hubs in each region.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_E3A79E63-BC4D-4E9C-68AD-25FF054E4C72@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The Biden administration hopes these hubs will spark a new US industry that senior administration officials estimated could catalyze around $50 billion in public and private investments and create tens of thousands of jobs.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_E7121D51-140A-1AE1-25A4-25FF055435BD@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cI think of hydrogen as the ultimate energy carrier,\u201d a senior administration official told reporters on a Thursday press call. \u201cIt\u2019s earned the nickname as the Swiss Army knife of clean energy.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_A8642FE4-CC18-50B9-8941-25FF0555866E@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Senior administration officials estimated that together, the seven hubs will eventually produce 3 million tons of hydrogen per year \u2013 a third of the total national goal DOE has set for 10 million tons of hydrogen produced by 2030.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_A6BDEC68-A0BA-6855-9E05-25FF0557E1AA@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      In addition to economic impacts, the Biden administration is betting big on hydrogen for its climate goals. Senior administration officials said the fuel will be used to clean up sectors of the economy like heavy duty trucking and industry, both of which are hard to wean off fossil fuels.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_A05690FD-65DF-45A4-4F2C-25FF0558C4F9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Biden\u2019s Environmental Protection Agency has also made hydrogen as an integral part of its proposed regulation to cut emissions from power plants \u2013 another huge fossil fuel emitter in the US economy.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_EC5AE271-8F87-4296-CEC1-25FF055E891D@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      A senior administration official estimated the hubs would reduce the country\u2019s planet-warming carbon dioxide pollution by roughly 25 million metric tons per year from end use, adding that is roughly equivalent to taking 5.5 million gasoline-powered cars off the road.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_67404C06-DB35-74FD-C9A4-25FF055F7A53@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The hubs that use methane gas to generate hydrogen will be outfitted with carbon capture technology to reduce their carbon dioxide pollution, a senior administration official said.
