Roughly a third of the union&#8217;s 146,000 workers with GM, <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-2\">Ford Motor<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-3\">Stellantis<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> went on strike after the sides failed to reach agreements by a Sept. 14 deadline.<\/p>\n<p>The UAW said the tentative agreement, which still must be ratified by members, adds battery workers from GM&#8217;s Ultium Cells joint venture and a division know as &#8220;subsystems&#8221; into the union&#8217;s master agreement with the company.<\/p>\n<p>GM is the only Detroit automaker with a joint venture battery plant in operation and unionized \u2014 making it the first in the country to face this particular negotiating dynamic and a landmark plant to set standards for the industry.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Like the agreements with Ford and Stellantis, the GM agreement has turned record profits into a record contract,&#8221; the UAW said in a release. &#8220;The deal includes gains valued at more than four times the gains from the union&#8217;s 2019 contract.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A GM spokesman confirmed the tentative agreement but declined to discuss specifics of the deal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;GM is pleased to have reached a tentative agreement with the UAW that reflects the contributions of the team while enabling us to continue to invest in our future and provide good jobs in the U.S.,&#8221; GM CEO Mary Barra said in a statement. &#8220;We are looking forward to having everyone back to work across all of our operations, delivering great products for our customers, and winning as one team.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Two sources familiar with the GM-UAW talks said negotiations occurred Sunday night and into the early morning to reach an agreement. News of a deal was first reported Monday by Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-7\">Ford Motor<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> was the first to reach a tentative agreement with the union, on Wednesday, followed by a deal with Chrysler parent <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-9\">Stellantis<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The 4\u00bd-year tentative agreements must still be ratified by members at each of the automakers. The headline economics of the deals, such as 25% wage increases for most workers, were patterned off Ford&#8217;s initial deal.<\/p>\n<p>The pact includes 25% pay increases over the terms of the agreement.\u00a0The raises and benefits such as cost-of-living adjustments cumulatively raise the top wage to more than $42 an hour, including an increase of 70% for starting wages to over $30 an hour, the union said. That increase would be at least two percentage points higher than the Ford and Stellantis deals.<\/p>\n<p>A UAW spokesman did not immediately respond for the difference in starting pay. However, it may be based off of cost-of-living adjustment estimates.<\/p>\n<p>Those deals also reinstated cost-of-living adjustments, reduced an eight-year path to top wages to three years and allowed the right to strike over plant closures, among other significantly enhanced benefits.<\/p>\n<p>The strikes have collectively cost GM, Ford and\u00a0Stellantis\u00a0billions of dollars in lost production. Ford said Thursday that the union&#8217;s strike has cost it $1.3 billion and the deal, if ratified by members, would increase labor costs by roughly\u00a0$850 to $900 per vehicle\u00a0produced.<\/p>\n<p>GM said Tuesday the strike had cost it about $800 million.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed agreements are record-setting for the union, which was far more confrontational and strategic during the talks than in recent history.<\/p>\n<p>The union initiated negotiations with all three automakers at once.
