{"id":2006,"date":"2023-10-19T11:45:26","date_gmt":"2023-10-19T11:45:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/connectwithfund.com\/news\/worlds-largest-chipmaker-tsmc-sees-biggest-drop-in-profit-in-nearly-five-years\/"},"modified":"2023-10-19T11:45:27","modified_gmt":"2023-10-19T11:45:27","slug":"worlds-largest-chipmaker-tsmc-sees-biggest-drop-in-profit-in-nearly-five-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/connectwithfund.com\/?p=2006","title":{"rendered":"World&#8217;s largest chipmaker TSMC sees biggest drop in profit in nearly five years"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-6\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-6-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p><span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-1\">Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> reported a third-quarter profit of 211 billion New Taiwan dollars ($6.69 billion) on Thursday as weak demand for consumer\u00a0electronics persists. <\/p>\n<p>Even though it was the largest profit decline since the first quarter of 2019, the world&#8217;s largest contract chipmaker bested analysts&#8217; expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Here are TSMC&#8217;s third quarter results versus Refinitiv consensus estimates:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Revenue:\u00a0<\/strong>546.73 billion\u00a0New Taiwan dollars ($17.28 billion), vs. NT$540.39 billion expected<\/li>\n<li><strong>Net income:<\/strong>\u00a0NT$211 billion, vs. NT$191.43 billion expected<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>TSMC reported revenue slipped 10.83% from a year ago to NT$546.73 billion, while net income fell 24.87% from a year ago to NT$211 billion.\u00a0That compares with TSMC&#8217;s guidance for third-quarter revenue between $16.7 billion and $17.5 billion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our business was supported by the strong ramp of our industry-leading 3-nanometer technology and higher demand for 5-nanometer technologies, partially offset by customers&#8217; ongoing inventory adjustment,&#8221; said TSMC in its earnings report.<\/p>\n<p>The chip giant said that revenue increased 13.7% in the third quarter as compared to the second quarter.<\/p>\n<p>In the second quarter, the Taiwanese firm reported a decline in quarterly profit for the first time in four years due to a post-pandemic plunge in the demand for consumer electronics like smartphones and laptops. But analysts have said chip inventories at smartphone and PC makers are running down and they expect restocking demand to come back.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>During the earnings call on Thursday afternoon, CEO C.C. Wei said that the firm expects inventories to continue to decline.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Due to the persistent weaker overall macroeconomic conditions and slow demand recovery in China, customers remain cautious in their inventory control. That&#8217;s why we expect the inventory digestion to continue in the fourth quarter,&#8221; said Wei.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Having said that, we are observing some early signs of demand stabilization in the PC and smartphone market,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>TSMC is the top producer of the world&#8217;s most advanced processors. The Taiwanese firm manufactures semiconductors for companies like <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-3\">Apple<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-4\">Nvidia<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>, that are often based on Arm architecture.<\/p>\n<p>TSMC currently manufactures 3-nanometer chips and plans to start 2-nanometer\u00a0mass production in 2025.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\">Smartphone market recovery<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Canalys data showed that the global smartphone market slid just 1% in third quarter 2023, pointing to a slowdown in its decline. In the second quarter, the market\u00a0plummeted 11% compared with the same period a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bolstered by regional recoveries and new product upgrade demand, the smartphone market recorded a double-digit sequential growth in Q3, ahead of the sales seasons,&#8221; said Canalys in a Tuesday report.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107282961\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107282961\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000311027\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"><\/span><span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The demand for AI chips driven has boomed led by the proliferation of large language models such as ChatGPT and Chinese clones.
