Rite Aid on Thursday filed a notice to the US Securities and Exchange Commission that it would be unable to file its latest quarterly financial report because it was looking at \u201cstrategic alternatives,\u201d which is Wall Street speak for \u201cconsidering bankruptcy.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_327D3C9D-3134-F250-F154-366774FDEBC4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      In that filing, the company said it expected its losses would increase significantly in the past quarter, which is saying something, considering it lost about three quarters of a billion dollars between March 2022 and March 2023 \u2014 and another $307 billion between March and May this year.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_F5B35F6A-1AE0-8C80-1682-36648F70A813@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      At the beginning of June, the last time the company filed a financial report, Rite Aid had just $135.5 million of cash on hand.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_6FBBB2F9-2E5E-3B2C-E6D7-36648F79A3CB@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      In by far the worst financial position of America\u2019s largest nationwide drug store chains, Rite Aid was fighting a losing battle against mounting debt, exacerbated by its legal troubles stemming from accusations of filing unlawful opioid prescriptions for customers.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_A49AC3CF-B362-2AB9-C040-36648F7C48F3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The Department of Justice filed suit against the company in March, claiming that it knowingly processed \u201cunlawful prescriptions for controlled substances.\u201d That stands in violation of the False Claims Act and Controlled Substances Act.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_277D79F2-5208-BB1D-5E3F-36648F7E3D07@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Walgreens, CVS and others settled similar lawsuits over the past few years, but they remain in better financial shape and were largely able to weather the tens of billions of dollars owed to various government agencies in settlements.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_BE5A257F-AE4D-BA4A-40D8-3662531CFFAF@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      <em>This is a breaking news story.
