\n Adam Aron, the CEO of AMC Entertainment, admitted Thursday that he was a \u201cvictim of an elaborate criminal extortion\u201d plot.\n <\/p>\n

\n He made the announcement<\/a> on X, formerly Twitter, writing that he fell victim to a \u201cthird party who was unknown to me related to false allegations about my personal life.\u201d He added that instead of giving into blackmail, he \u201cpersonally engaged counsel and other professional advisors and reported the matter to law enforcement.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Before Aron released his statement, Semafor reported that Aron fell victim to a catfishing scam that targeted him for hush money and threats. The US Attorney\u2019s Office for the Southern District of New York said last year it charged Sakoya Blackwood with \u201cinterstate communications with the intent to extort, cyberstalking, and extortion\u201d and that she targeted a CEO of a publicly traded company, but it wasn\u2019t publicly known until Thursday\u2019s Semafor report, confirmed in part by Aron, who the CEO was.\n <\/p>\n

\n Investigators said Blackwood created \u201cmultiple online identities\u201d to target Aron. She then demanded money to keep messages and photos private, according to court documents obtained by CNN.\n <\/p>\n

\n On X, Aron continued that following a \u201cvigorous federal criminal investigation,\u201d the perpetrator was convicted this past summer. Blackwood was convicted of cyberstalking and was sentenced to time already served in jail.\n <\/p>\n

\n He also said that the incident was \u201centirely a personal matter\u201d and that he informed the AMC\u2019s board of directors, as well as reviewed the events with an independent outside counsel. Aron said that the \u201cmatter is closed,\u201d and he remains the CEO of AMC.\n <\/p>\n

\n AMC\u2019s board of directors said in a statement to CNN that it had \u201cdetermined it was a personal matter, and considers the issue resolved.\u201d\n <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
