\n The University of Pennsylvania\u2019s board of trustees is tapping J. Larry Jameson, its longest serving dean, to become the school\u2019s interim president, replacing Liz Magill, following her resignation last weekend.\n <\/p>\n

\n Jameson is dean of UPenn\u2019s medical school and will take the helm of the Ivy League institution at a moment of crisis.\n <\/p>\n

\n The\u00a0board of trustees said\u00a0Jameson will be appointed as interim president effective Tuesday and remain in that role until a permanent president is named.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cPenn is fortunate to have the benefit of Dr. Jameson\u2019s experience and leadership during this time of transition,\u201d Julie Platt, the interim chair of UPenn\u2019s board of trustees, said in an announcement sent Tuesday afternoon.\n <\/p>\n

\n Platt praised Jameson as a \u201cconsummate University citizen\u201d and a \u201ccollaborative, innovative and visionary leader with extensive engagement with each of Penn\u2019s 12 schools.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Both of UPenn\u2019s leaders as of a few days ago \u2013 board chair Scott Bok and Magill \u2013 departed Saturday just a week after Magill\u2019s disastrous testimony before Congress on antisemitism.\n <\/p>\n

\n Magill stepped down under immense pressure on Saturday after struggling to answer whether calls for genocide against Jews violates university rules. Magill had remained interim president until Tuesday. Penn did not have a succession plan in place despite a flood of calls for Magill\u2019s resignation this week, a source told CNN.\n <\/p>\n

\n Magill will remain on Penn\u2019s faculty as a tenured professor at Penn Carey Law School.\n <\/p>\n

\n Jameson is\u00a0UPenn\u2019s longest-serving dean\u00a0and previously\u00a0denounced calls for genocide\u00a0as a form of hate, according to The Daily Pennsylvanian. Jameson also serves as executive vice president of the University of Pennsylvania for the Health System.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cPlease join me in thanking Dr. Jameson for stepping into this role and for guiding Penn during this challenging time,\u201d Platt said.\n <\/p>\n

\n Jameson will have his hands full until Penn names a permanent leader. Despite Magill\u2019s resignation, the antisemitism problem on Penn\u2019s campus \u2013 and many other college campuses across America \u2013 is ongoing.\n <\/p>\n

\n Criticism of Penn\u2019s response to antisemitism escalated even before Hamas\u2019 deadly Oct. 7 attack on Israel. Donors lashed out against administration in the wake of the Palestine Writes literature festival held at Penn in September, an event that the administration acknowledged features speakers who had made antisemitic statements in the past.\n <\/p>\n

\n As incidents of antisemitism rose on campus in recent months, Magill and the Penn administration struggled to respond to and put a stop to hate speech.\n <\/p>\n
